#OKWomenYouCanCountOn featuring Nicolette Tsombanellis
Nicolette Tsombanellis is the owner of OK MiniMark De Grendel and one of the #OKWomenYouCanCountOn we chatted to for #WomensMonth. She is a strong, independent female who has some great practical advice for young girls thinking of starting a career in business or retail.
Who are your role models?
I’m extremely independent as I’ve been on my own since the age of 16. I look up to people like Warren Buffet, Richard Branson, Robert Kiyosaki, Raymond Ackerman and my first boss, Nigel Sutcliffe.
What advice do you have for any young girl who has her sights set on a career in retail/business?
Focus. Study as much as you can and get practical experience by working in the retail environment. You need to have a good understanding of Cost and Management Accounting, Advertising, Marketing, Financial Modelling, Commercial Law, Labour Law and Customer Relationship Marketing. To be a successful retail business owner, you need to learn to delegate or be prepared to be hands-on in every single department 365 days a year.
Best business advice you’ve been given?
Don’t be afraid to expand or upgrade.
You learn to swim when you are thrown in the deep end.
Many people will tell you “no”. You need to persevere until you succeed.
