3 Ways To Cure Cabin Fever For Kids

The winter holiday with your children is a time for getting cosy indoors and bonding with your children. But sooner or later, they're bound to get restless and then you need an action plan. Here are 5 fun ways to counter cabin fever this winter.

Get out and into nature

Nothing beats the indoor blues like getting some fresh air (and your blood flowing). Exercise and feel-good endorphins go hand-in-hand. However, it doesn't have to be extreme. A good, old-fashioned walk in a park or a nature reserve is a lovely way to burn off some energy and keep young minds occupied and wondering about the wonderful world around them. If you're not keen on going alone with your children, rope in a friend or two and make it a group adventure.

Keep 'em curious

Thinking back about your own childhood, chances are you don't remember the time you spent in a shopping mall, but rather the times you were exposed to something new that changed your view of the world. A day trip to a museum, aquarium, planetarium or the zoo makes for an awesome winter activity. What's more, after the trip, you can keep your children busy by asking them to draw and describe all the things they've seen and learnt.

Collect the colours and textures of winter

Wherever you live, the colours and textures of winter are different to other seasons. A great game to play is to ask your young ones to go out into the garden or around the home and collect objects that represent winter to them. Dry leaves, branches, woollen threads, food leftovers like naartjie peels, or abstract things (like the colour of the sky) are examples, but the list here is as long as your child's imagination. After the listing and collection of things, ask them to put it all on a big carton or the pages of a diary or notebook as a memory of what winter is about. This will not only encourage them to really be in the moment, but also teach them that they have the power to make something beautiful out of the things around them.
