Who says winter has to be all doom and gloom? Making the most of this unique time of the year might be more fun than you think. Here are some suggestions that will put the win in winter… even if you always thought you were not a winter person.
The magic of the winter walk
Let’s be real — cabin fever can get to you. But going out for a stroll with the family is a great way to cure the winter blues. Depending on where you live and the weather, select a time of day that will bring out the magic of the season. Do a late afternoon walk and enjoy the sun’s last warm rays and a spectacular sunset. Or enjoy the crispness of a winter morning and breathe in the fresh air before cosying up inside with a warm cup of tea or coffee.
The indoor treasure hunt
If the weather really forces you to stay indoors, there are lots of things you can do with the young ones to keep the boredom away. One of these is the good old treasure hunt. Hide something delicious somewhere in the house and provide some cryptic clues and instructions around the house. It’s a fantastic way to teach children problem-solving skills in a fun, safe way.
Family flick time
If you’re part of a typical family, chances are good every person in your family has different tastes when it comes to movies (especially if your kids are a little older). A great way of bonding, and keeping everyone engaged, is to watch a great movie together. Take turns and let every family member choose a movie for your allocated family flick time. And then talk about why you liked or didn’t like the movie. Not only will you learn something interesting about your family’s interests and tastes, you might also discover a movie you’ve never heard of before!
Bake & bond
Baking or cooking together is a great way to bond and have fun in a constructive way. Not to mention the real reward of having to enjoy the results afterwards. Try a trusted family recipe or have a look at some great winter recipe ideas here: https://www.okfoods.co.za/recipes.html
Build a fort
Nothing says winter fun like building a fort in the living room. Using blankets, duvets, pillows, scatter cushions and whatever else the ‘architects’ decide on, building an indoor fort will stimulate your young ones’ problem-solving skills, and create a place where they’re kings and queens of the castle. Add some torches, cookies, and a radio, and you have a winning recipe.
The family dance-off
Get the blood pumping while pumping the beats! Simply put on your favourite tracks and get shakin’. Let each family member add their favourite song to the playlist, or see who can come up with the most ridiculous dance move and get ready to laugh your heads off…
Beat the boredom with board games
For generations, board games have killed time and made families bond. Of course, each family has their favourite classic. But there are also new, creative ones. Whichever games you choose, may the best player win, but remember that having a good time is more important than winning!
Out-of-home excursions
Another way to take care of cabin fever is to have an excursion together. Whether it’s going to play laser tag, putt-putt or go bowling, or learning more about the world at your local museum, aquarium or library, you can’t go wrong by taking a little family trip to an exciting new location.
A weekend away
Sometimes, a short break can be as good as a holiday. Take a weekend and visit your nearest natural hot water springs or explore any of the nature parks around the country. Not only will you get in touch with the wonders of nature, you’ll also breathe in some fresh air to recharge your batteries for the rest of winter.
And remember, whatever you decide to do, don’t forget to take it easy and have fun!
